descriptions, or lack thereof

The Bookseller of Kabul discusses a very interesting topic, and i wish the author had used a bit more description throughout her observations of the turmoil Afghanistan was facing before she arrived, and during. While i understand that the author was not present throughout her back story on Sultan Kahn, i do not think that it's out of the question to put a bit more descriptive writing into scenes that should normally evoke an emotional response from the reader. whether describing the young brides response to the sudden news of her suitor or the horrible scene of Sultan coming across the destroyed bodies of the former president and his brother, i found myself feeling absolutely nothing. Books very often evoke emotional responses with me, and i think that the style of description throughout Bookseller does have a certain appeal towards the subject matter, but i do think at key points within the plot, more description could be used to at least make the actions resonate with the readers more.
